No demolition without permission!

Mick Gilgunn

TENANTS GROUPS from all over London came together at City Hall, London, on 3rd November in a show of unity. There was a strength of feeling from the grassroots that the mayor Sadiq Khan should listen to representatives of council estates which are facing demolition.

It had been policy of the mayor that tenants from all council estates facing demolition would have the right to a full ballot on this burning issue.

However there are 36 housing estates that are not entitled to a ballot as they are small units. This has caused anger with many tenants who hold strong to the ideal of a secure tenancy agreement. Among the speakers were tenants from Cressingham Gardens, Lambeth, who have been lobbying the GLA consistently. There were also speakers from estates in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, and Southwark. Paul Burnham from Haringey spoke about the recent controversial Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV), showing how tenants can win.

Banners were displayed defiantly from unions and housing groups in a march around City Hall. The struggle continues!
