DURING JANUARY UCU members in the older (pre-1992) universities were balloted over strike action in response to attacks on their pensions. The employer, Universities UK, wants to end defined contribution pensions, making the well-being of workers in retirement dependent on stock markets. This follows a massive under-valuation of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) fund, which is paid into by the richest and most thriving higher education institutions in the country.
This is a vital struggle within the context of wider attacks on pensions in the public sector. All members of the labour movement should support it. Invite a speaker from your local UCU branch to come to your Labour branch meetings, and pass motions in support of the dispute. You can follow the latest news about it on the UCU website: https://www.ucu.org.uk
