LA teachers strike

The wave of strike action by teachers sweeping across much of the United States reached Los
Angeles, the nation’s second largest school district, in January. The biggest strike yet saw some
30,000 members of the United Teacher of Los Angeles stage an official, indefinite action that secured
significant gains after six days of picket lines and mass rallies. In addition to a 6% pay rise, the new
contract promises reduction in class sizes, the recruitment of more school nurses and psychologists
and a potential cap on charter (academy) schools. Since the LA strike Denver, Colorado teachers
came out on 11th February and it looks likely that West Virginia educators will be taking further action
before February is out.
