OXFORDSHIRE FIRE SERVICE (OFS) has decided to shelve plans for cutting crews from five to three. So, for the time being, Oxfordshire FBU can be proud that it has successfully fought off this threat to firefighters and our local communities
I have no doubt that this decision was based on the overwhelming pressure on OFS as a result of motions being passed at brigade and Labour branches around Oxfordshire, campaigning activity including letters to councillors, meetings with councillors and solidarity within our membership and the wider labour movement.
We didn't even need to officially launch our campaign!! This kind of activity was something that local OFS and Tory councillors had never seen before. It is a reminder that we are ready to fight and are able to mobilise in this targeted way.
Members of Oxfordshire FBU cannot thank our local comrades enough. A special mention to Cathy Augustine and local LRC members who organised on so many levels – getting support from John McDonnell and leaders of other unions and general help and advice to push our campaign from so many angles. The service didn’t know what had hit them or how to defend their proposals against the strength of public feeling.
This is a great example of solidarity in action and illustrates that organising is powerful – it does work and is worthwhile!
